About Us - A note from the farmer
Hello, my name is David Van Eeckhout and my wife, Melinda and I are the owners of Hog’s Back Farm. My career in farming grows out of an interest in gardening and an obsession with knowing where my food comes from. I spent five years working and farming alongside some of the top vegetable producers in the East and Midwest before purchasing the land for Hog’s Back Farm in 2002. After a year preparing the farm we began our CSA operation in 2003. 2016 marks our 14th year in CSA production, with 175 shares serving about 250 families in the Twin Cities area. In 2009 the farm became certified organic by MOSA and in 2014 we installed solar panels on the farm to provide all of our electricity needs.
95% of our production is for our CSA. This allows us to bring the highest quality produce to our boxes each week and maintain a close, personal connection with our members.
We're very interested in the healthful properties of whole foods and it shows in our vegetables. Melinda is a Licensed Acupuncturist and practitioner of Oriental Medicine licensed in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Her approach to wellness through Traditional Chinese Medicine is a natural complement to my approach to wellness through the production of nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables.
When we started the farm in 2002 the local foods movement was still in it's infancy. During the last 14 years local foods have moved from a niche to a fad to a trend. There are now large, conventional vegetable farms marketing themselves as CSA farms, but that's very different from what we do. Our goal is to continue this as a sustainable business for our family, as well as a source of the highest quality food available anywhere.
